Slumdog Millionaire.

Slumdog Millionaire

In today’s society we have various issues that sometimes have to shown to the public in order to get notice. One of the ways to achieve this is by coming up with a movie that will talk about this particular issues. Slumdog Millionaire focuses on some issues that affect society but are not necessary talk about often. This movie focuses on the issues of violence that comes with having a different religion. It also focuses on how an orphan child had to come up with ways to survive in this world. We also learn about the economic advances that the country is doing as the same time that our character grows up. The movie takes us thru a story that is full of hope and inspirational power. A view of a child’s life who did everything he could to survive and still believe in love.
Slumdog Millionaire touches that point of religion. It shows us that in some part of the world religion is a cause for death in some people’s eye’s. There is a part of the movie where Jamal and Salim’s mom is kill in by people who do not share the same religion. The movie shows us a bit of the violence between Muslims and Hindus. In fact this group of people attack their slumdog and kill and set people of fire. All of this is because they don’t share the same religion. Most of us like to think that religion is not a cause of violence any longer but the matter of fact is that it is. Religion should not what causes the violence but rather the people that can’t see that not everyone shares their believes. It doesn’t not happen necessary around the conner from our house but it does happens around the world. Jamal and Salim become orphans of this event of violence.
Jamal and Salim set out with a girl from their slum. Jamal, Salim, and Latika takes us thru the hardship an orphan child has to go thru in order to survive. The three of them dig thru piles of trash to find what they need. They encounter a guy who seems to be nice but in the end is using children to beg for money. The three try to scape this guy after realizing that he purposely was blinding kids in order for them to make more money. This event alone show how kids who end up as orphans and on the streets a prone to encounter danger every step they take. This film forces us to see what happens to kids who are less fortunate. They are exploited and some times this monsters that they work for end up just hurting them. During this whole process affects the brothers differently. Salim starts to liking the bad life with guns and robbing, he start to become a gangster. Salim likes feeling like he has power and respect even if that respect is earn thru a gun. Jamal in the other hand he is quite opposite from his brother. Jamal doesn’t care about becoming a gangster like his brother. The boys grow up and can clearly see who society has affected them in different ways. Society has turn one of the brothers to violence and becoming self center not caring about no one else. While the other is not about violence at all and all he wants to focus on is on the love he feels for Latika.
In Mumbai over 2,000 women and over 4,000 children are reported missing every year. For traffickers, dealing with children's "re-usable" bodies is a high profit venture. This is another issue that most of us want to just turn away from because if we don’t see it then is not happening. The way society defines what a child is worth only because where they come from is just sad. For instance India if a child is a Muslim and come’s from one of the slums then that child is not worth much. It happens more often then we like to think and this movie clearly show us that we can’t keep pretending that it doesn’t happen any longer. We also have the fact that their are people who clearly take advantage of children for their own benefit. For instance Jamal would have had his eye take out in order to enhance his earnings as a beggar. While Latika was use for prostitution. This two are just examples from a movie but in reality it happens every single day. Overall this kids gain life experiences thru the most harsh situation a kid can possibly have. This does not happen only in India but in the whole world some places more than others but is something that society can’t ignore anymore.
Another point of view of this movie is the economic growth of the country. While we see Jamal grow up and go thru harsh youth we also see the country develop. As the story develops we can see India as a post-modern country. Post-modern India we can see the poverty levels in which people live. They live in primitive squalor which means that they didn’t  have basic pluming systems and much more. As the story develops we can see how the country becomes more interdependent with the western world. From tourism to the rise of India as a tech-support and customer service outlet for the wester world. At a point in the movie when Jamal reunites with Salim we can see that high rise buildings are going up. This high rise are being place where slum’s used to be.
Even after all of this social issues we still have what Jamal has giving us thru this film which is hope. By him winning is kind of way of saying there is hope to help fix all of those issues that go on in the world. He goes thru all that he does because he believes in one thing that is the hope that he has in finding his love. The love that was taking away in order to prostitute her. This give us a bit of light among all of these dark shadows that are our social problems. It also teaches us that we can learn from our bad experiences and still come out on top. He believe in the love that he had for Latika and that push him thru to not become like his brother to to be him and the good person that he is. That also show us that even in the worst life cases we still have a choice to make and Jamal choose to be a good person not like his brother who become a gangster.
Slumdog takes a tragic experience from Mumbai youth to account for all of the issues that this movie focuses on. It give us a bit of insight on what else goes on in the world particularly in India. Jamal playing the Indian version of “Who wants to be a millionaire” is a story telling kind of way for us to understand what this is all about. The flashbacks that happen between each question is just that a story that is showing us the bigger picture as far as the social issues goes. The angle that is being use to tell the story is well from a young boys eyes. The main way for us to understand about India’s social problems is by us seeing thru Jamal eyes. This particular way of telling this story allowed the audience to feel what the main characters where feeling. The film mange to tap on a human emotion that is very real. The audience also felt a sense of injustice for this little boys especially Jamal. Injustice because no one ever wants to see a kid grow up in those kinds of situation. No one wants to see a child in that level of poverty. I believe that this film had a great impact on society because of the amount of information the audience was able to get about the social problems that we still have and that go on in other parts of the world.
Society needs to learn to stop ignoring issues that come with poverty and violence. Issues that a country have because of how far behind their economic system may be. Issues with kids and women disappearing because of human  traffickers. All of those issues have to start getting the attention that they need in order for then to stop. This film brought to light issues that most of us choose to ignore only because of the mind set of “if is not happening in our backyards than there is nothing to worry about”. Its does it by keeping the audience captivated thru the love story that unfolds, as well as the dangerous adventures of little children who are in danger all the time. It does it by keeping us wanting to know the end of this spectacular story which brings us much more need it information about society’s around the world.
Have a good day.

New updates!

Hey guys,

It's been a while since my last post I think about 2 months now. WOW that's a while but I'm back and I now and there is so much that is going on that I don't know where to start. Ok I guess for starters I'm on my last semester of my photography school. It's been two long years but I'm just a few weeks away of finishing this journey. Well now during this few weeks my classmates and I have to each produce a portfolio, create 25 images to go in the portfolio, plan a portfolio show, create a website, business cards, upload images, etc... the list goes on and on but its all is an amazing journey and I would not change it for nothing in the world. It's better to stay busy than not busy at all besides all of this gives me a look at what the real world will be all about. Ok during this time I will keep you guys posted on whats happening next and what I'm working on so until have a wonderful day.

Last but not least

Hey guys,

My classmates and I had a field trip day which was different but good. Different because it was not a typical field trip were everyone stays together and stuff. This field trip we were pretty much by our selfs. We went to a little town name Madison. We shot the building/ houses on this tiny town. Which is another form of a low rise. The camera used was 4x5 and the lens used was a 135mm lens. The film was Fuji chrome provia 100 iso. The settings on the camera were f-stop of 16, shutter speed for normal was 60th of a second. Then I bracket to get a over and under the bracket was about 1/2 stop difference from the normal. Then the film was developed and the scanned and here is the final image. Enjoy!

Business/Commercial Interior

Hello,

The next assignment is a business/ commercial interior. That means that we can shoot anything from a restaurant to a doctors office. This a very unique experience we all faced challenges when it come to this assignment. Challenges from nailing down a venue to technical challenges. I had a good time shooting this assignment, being on location was just fun. This assignment was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II, used a 17mm tilt-shift, a tripod, and a light meter. The settings were iso of 100 f-stop of 16, shutter speed of 3.2 seconds, 4 seconds, and 6 seconds. I started using strobe lights but the lights were over powering the ambient light and it just not looked right. When the image was taken into photoshop a high pass filter was use, the lens correction filter was used, the clone stamp and similar tools were used to get rid of two poles that were in the middle of the room. Getting rid of those two poles was a challenge but I did it :). Ok guys here is the final image. Enjoy!

Have a great day!

Residential Interior

Hello guys,

Well our next assignment has to do with residential homes. We are suppose to shoot an interior from a home. Well to say the least I had a really hard time finding a home interior but I found what I could. I really wish that I had a better one but at the end I'm happy with my residential interior. I have to say that is just simple not much to look at but simple. The residential was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II, using a tilt-shift lens, and a tripod. I didn't use any strobe lights for this I just use ambient light. The settings were f-stop of 11, shutter speed of 25 seconds, iso of 100. Then it was time to work up the image, I used photoshop. Use a high pass filter, lens correction filter, and curves. This led to this final image Enjoy!

Have a wonderful day!

Final Image: Low Rise

Hello,

The low rise assignment presented some challenges but over all I'm very happy with this image. This building is interesting because it has angles that are pointing in different angles (if thats a good way to explain it.) Any how this building was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II, the lens use was a 24mm tilt-shift lens, and a tripod. The the f-stop was set at 22 only because I was having a really hard time getting both sides of the building sharp. The iso was of 100 and the shutter speed was at 30th of a second. After shooting the building came time for post production. This image went thru a couple of techniques in photoshop. One thing was the need of a high pass because of the sharpness problem with both side so the building. Second the sky was replace to make the building look better. A few post had to be taken out of the image to make it look better. Ok guys well here is the final image. Enjoy!

Have a wonderful day!

Low Rise

Hey guys,

Next assignment is low rise which means that the building has to be less than 10 stories. As part of the assignment we have to go out and find the buildings that we would like to photograph. I went out a couple of time but I have to say that I had a hard time finding a low rise that I liked. It seems that low rise buildings are not as attractive as the high rise buildings. Well after looking for a while I found a low rise that I like to photograph the bad thing is that I only found one building that I liked. Here is the building. Enjoy!

Have a good day!

Final Image: High Rise

Hey guys,

Ok so remember long time ago that my classmates and I were studying architecture photography. Ok well the first assignment we had to photograph a high rise building that was more than 10 stories tall. This was not done with a digital camera but instead with a film 4x5 camera. The 4x5 camera is a great tool to have when it comes to architecture. It makes things so much better and easier (if you do it right). The settings for this shoot was pretty much a 4x5 camera mounted on a tripod. The film iso was of 100 (Fuji Provia Chrome) 90mm lens, f-stop was set to 16 and the shutter speed was set to 60 for the normal. Then I bracket about 1/2 a stop difference from my normal to get a over and under. Ok guys well here is the final result. Enjoy!

Have a great day.

Food... anyone hungry?

Hey guys,

Here is my new assignment and as the tittle suggest it has to do with food. This time we are required to come up with ideas of food photography. There's two ways to go about this, One is go the commercial route which means that the image would be more for advertising food from a restaurant or a food company. This requires for the photographer to know how the client wants the final result to be. The other route is to go more the editorial way which means that you shoot food just for the fun of it with no particular purpose and no particular structure. So I decided to take the editorial route. Here are some of my ideas, there nothing crazy, there simple and clean. Later I will post about the set up and the final images until then have a good day!

Fasion/soft goods final results!

Hey guys,

Here is the final images from fashion/ soft goods assignment. enjoy!

Have a great day!

Fashion/soft goods

Hey guys,

Ok so for my fashion/ soft goods assignment I shot a scarf with a purse and a necklace. Lighting was very simple. I shot it on top of a black light table, using two lights with soft boxes. I had thought of using gels but at the end I decide against it. I think I decided against the gel because it really did not go well with the props. Anyhow set up was very simple and easy. Here is are two images of my set up.

Have a wonderful day!

Editorial assignment not good!

Hey guys,

As you all know I had an editorial assignment to do. My topic was road rage and I can say that this is more difficult than I ever thought. I had a hard time coming up with any ideas. The ideas that I come up with none of them work :/. Disappointed much? yeah of course. This is an assignment that Im not proud of and I will re-do it, if I can come up with something that will work. The truth is that so far I have failed at coming up with any ideas. So you guys will get to see the final re-do image (if I can come up with something). Wish me luck and until then well I will show and share other stuff.

sad face until I can figure out a good idea for this assignment.
Have a wonderful day!

Road Rage?

Hey guys,

So you wonder what do I mean by road rage let me explain. Our next assignment has to do with editorial work. If you don't know Editorial is anything that is a non-selling ad. Editorial images are found in articles. Editorial images are related to the article that their attached to. Well my topic is road rage and I have to translate this topic onto an image without using people. I thought that this topic would be simple as far as coming up with ideas. Well translating road rage onto an image without people is more difficult that I thought. I struggle coming up with ideas but I think I have a few (well I hope I have a few). So here are some of the ideas I come up with and well later on I will show you guys the end result.
Until then goodbye and have a wonderful day :).

First two assigments

Hey just wanted to let everyone know that we had our assignments critiqued on wednesday. Well critique went well and it was not too bad for the first two assignments so now we are ready to move on to the next thing. Now our next assignment is just interesting I have to say. Any how I will soon be blogging about our next assignment. So to all of my classmates good well done!

Have a great day :)

What do you think?

Well guys here is my final result for my mimic a master assignment. I must say that its not quite the same but I'm glad we had this assignment. Enjoy :)

Here is my image:
now here is the original :

Set up (mimic a master assignment)

Hey guys,

Let me start by telling you guys that this assignment seem simple which for the most part it was but what I though was going to be the simplest part turn out to be a bit of a challenge. The challenge come with the powder motion. That took a while to get and its not exactly as the original but I still got motion. :)
First the equipment: Photogenic light kit, Soft box, white reflector card, black reflective table, pocket wizards, extension cords.
Props: make up brush, and make up powder.
Camera: Canon Rebel T1i, Lens 18-55mm, ISO 100, WB Daylight, F-stop 8, shutter determine by strobes settings.

Set up was very simple, place the power on a piece of paper that is big enough to hold the power but small enough to not see it in the image. Then have someone to assist you by holding the brush in place. That way you can go ahead and determine where you light needs to be. In this image the light needs to be on the side of the brush so they will be a clear highlight. Place white reflector board diagonally across from the strobe. That way light will be reflected back to side where there's little light and also to create the highlight on that opposite side. Light needs to be power down all the way down. The light I used was powered to about 31w. Make sure to use the soft box since the light need to be diffuse so its not harsh on the product. Then you will need someone to keep holding the brush to create the powder action as its on the original image. The motion that the power created is not exactly as the one on the original image but its still motion. First pick up power with the make up brush, then tap (strength of tap will determine the motion of power) on the brush to have the powder fall down this will create motion.
Now taping the brush and trying to keep it in the same place its a bit tricky so you will have to shoot a few times so be patience.
Here are two images of the set up. One image is closer then the other but pretty much they are the same thing.

Final Product (alcohol assignment.)

Hey guys just want to show you my final result. Enjoy the Mojito :)

Set up (alcohol assignment)

Hello everyone,

ok so it's been about 2 weeks since my last blog and I haven't show you guys how the set up was for my alcohol shoot. Let start by telling you guys that the shoot was interesting to say the least. The reason I say that is because well at first the style of my beverage wasn't translating to my picture. What I mean by that is that what I had picture in my head was not working in real life. The lighting had to be change a bit since well I had to shoot from a different angle. Now let me tell you make sure you have everything that you need and then some. Now the props that I used was a glass, limes, fake ice cubes, leave mints, and mojito mix. I shot my image on a white reflective table which at the end I end was not necessary since I crop out the reflection of the glass. I try using gels but they didn't work well with my shot. The equipment that I used was photogenic light kit, black reflector cards, pocket wizards, white reflective light table, one soft box, and extension cords. I only used one soft box on the light that was lighting the subject. The other  two lights were use to light the table so no diffusion was necessary.

Camera settings: Canon Rebel T1i, ISO 100, F-stop 8, shutter was at 125(that really does not affect your image since strobes act as your shutter.) and white balance was set to daylight.

Here is a little diagram of my set up:

Mimic a Master!!!

Why mimic a master you ask? well let me explain, I'm been ask to mimic a master photographers work. That means that I'm recreating an image of a professional photographer to the best of my abilities. I have turn to the internet to do my research and well I have found photographers that I truly love their work. The lighting, composition, angles, highlights, shadows, and angle of camera have to be as close as possible to the original image. This are some of the photographers that I really like Andy Hagedon, Rich Begany, and Mark Feaster. Here some of the shoot I encounter and would love to try to recreate. Please excuse the last image is a phone picture since I was not able to get one from the web.

A drink anyone?

Ok guys my first assignment in my Commercial photography class has to do with Wine/Spirits/Beer.
I got inspiration by looking at some images online. I have a few sketches(which their not perfect) of the ideas that I want to create. I hope to be able to bring my vision to life.  Sorry if the sketches are to light but soon will see the final product.

Commercial

Hey there!

My name is Yesenia Quezada-Friedman. I'm a 23 year old photography student. I will be graduating later this year but before that there's a few classes that I still need to get thru.

One of the classes that I need to conquer in order to graduate is commercial. Commercial is where we learn how to properly shoot images for magazine ads, restaurant menus, billboard etc...
Now this blog is a big part of that class since here is where we are going to post our photo work, sketches, and any photographer that we want to blog about.

ok with that in mind I soon will be blogging and well you will see some of the work that I do. I'm very thrill to be where I'm now and extremely excited to where I will be in the future.
